From Monday, Météo France is forecasting extreme temperatures in Paris and the wider region. The Ile-de-France Region and Île-de-France Mobilités will be activating its extreme heat plan.
To ensure passenger comfort and mitigate health and safety risks linked to high temperatures, Île-de-France Mobilités is activating its heatwave plan in public transport in the Ile-de-France region. This extensive plan, prepared with the transport operators and a part of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games plans, aims to cater to the needs of the ten million spectators and passengers expected during the games.
It includes the distribution of more than 2.5 million water cartons across the entire network and water fountains in almost all the stations serving competition venues.
Free distribution of water cartons across the network
From Monday, more than 2.5 million water cartons will be ready to be distributed by RATP and SNCF to all passengers using the Ile-de-France transport network.
This provision is designed to accommodate the increased passenger numbers during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, compared to the usual 120,000 bottles distributed during a normal summer.
Seventy-four stations in the Ile-de-France region will be part of this operation.
Installation of water fountains and misting systems
As part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the transport authority has planned improvements for the comfort of passengers in the network's stations:
- Ninety-four train stations are now equipped with water fountains, including 32 stations directly serving Olympic and Paralympic venues. This covers nearly 90% of Olympic and Paralympic stations.
- “Passenger zones” for spectator shuttles (drop-off/pick-up zones) are positioned in shaded areas or equipped with misters and shade covers. For example, 20 misters will be deployed in five passenger zones near Versailles (Rive Droite, Chantiers, Château), Chelles and Bussy-St-Georges stations). In case of a severe heatwave, transport operators may also distribute bottled water.
In addition, the Île-de-France Region is distributing nearly 200,000 hats, fans or water bottles near fan zones and spectator shuttle drop-off/pick-up areas, using cargo bikes. A map listing all drinking water points and public toilets has been posted online: Map — Open data Île-de-France (iledefrance.fr)
Passenger comfort at the heart of Île-de-France Mobilités policies
In 2016, Valérie Pécresse, president of Île-de-France Mobilités, mandated that air conditioning or refrigerated ventilation should be installed in all public transport in the Ile-de-France region.
The proportion of rolling stock equipped with air conditioning or refrigerated ventilation has increased rapidly thanks to the significant investment made in modernising rolling stock. This investment is part of the transport revolution initiated in 2016, it aims to make the Ile-de-France network one of the most modern in the world by 2030.
Current statistics:
- 53% of buses and coaches (4,510 vehicles out of 10,500) are air-conditioned
- 73% of trains are air-conditioned (over 90% will be by 2025)
- 46% of metro trains have refrigerated ventilation
- All new metro trains will be equipped with refrigerated ventilation by 2035
- All trams, except those on line T1 (which will be upgraded by the end of 2024), have refrigerated ventilation.
Additionally, the Île-de-France Region has listed all the places to stay cool in Paris and the region facilitating access to climate shelters: IDF of tomorrow - Climate shelters (smartidf.services).
Activation Criteria: The extreme heat plan is activated when temperatures reach 31°C during the day and 21°C at night for three consecutive days.
