Presentation of Paris Region

The Paris Region is the leading economic region in France, representing one-third of the national gross domestic product (GDP) on its own. With a population of over 12 million inhabitants spread across eight dynamic departments, it is a true crossroads of talent, ideas, and capital.

Paris Region stands out for its diversity and dynamism. It hosts prestigious institutions such as universities, grandes écoles, headquarters of international companies, and museums, which forge its unique identity. The region is also at the forefront of research, innovation, and competitiveness, making it the top region in France for welcoming researchers and housing research and innovation laboratories.

In terms of transport, the region is investing massively to modernize and expand its infrastructure. The Grand Paris Express project, with more than 200 km of additional lines and 68 new stations planned for 2030, will revolutionize mobility in the Paris Region.

Paris Region is also the world's leading tourist destination, attracting 50 million visitors per year thanks to its numerous historical and cultural sites. Economically, the region actively supports its businesses, encourages innovation, and helps young people find employment through apprenticeship and vocational training programs.

The Paris Region is also committed to bringing nature back into the city and reducing air pollution consistently. With remarkable forests like Fontainebleau and several Regional Natural Parks such as Haute Vallée de Chevreuse, Paris Region is a haven of nature.

With nearly 80% of its surface covered by agricultural, forest, and natural areas, the Paris Region is a large rural territory. This represents one-sixth of the Paris Region population and more than 1,000 municipalities. Regional action for agriculture and food targets agricultural actors, territories, consumers, and all links in the supply chain. With an annual budget of 47 million euros for agriculture and rurality, the Paris Region acts on all fronts to support the sector: support for the installation and start-up of young farmers, the development of short supply chains, the preservation of agricultural land, training for agricultural professions, etc.

The region also engages on the international stage to promote its attractiveness to foreign investors and support the Paris Region’s companies wishing to export. It manages European structural funds and facilitates access to European financing for project leaders.

Because culture contributes to the vitality of a territory and the prosperity of its economy, regional action for culture is strong. It aims to support artists and all forms of artistic practices: live performance, visual arts, digital arts, cinema (production, post-production, writing aids), the book sector (support for independent booksellers and publishers), contemporary music (support for concert halls, events).

In terms of governance, the Paris Region has been led by Valérie Pécresse since 2016. The regional council meets regularly to debate and make decisions that are implemented by the standing committee and a regional administration composed of 1,800 agents at the headquarters and 9,000 agents in high schools.

With its rich heritage, economic strengths, and commitment to innovation, the Paris Region positions itself as a region resolutely looking towards the future, capable of meeting the challenges of major global metropolises.
